PREVENTING EBOLA OUTBREAKS: THE BENEFITS OF CONSERVATION
The Ebola crisis in West Africa brings to light critical links between biodiversity loss and human health. IUCN delivered a statement at the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Conference of the Parties, which concludes today, noting that the drivers of emerging infectious diseases are also the leading pressures contributing to biodiversity loss. These underlying drivers, such as land use change including deforestation, are causing massive changes in our ecosystems.

INSPIRING PLACES

Berlin – the value of green spaces for a sustainable future
The German capital is one of the greenest cities in Europe, with more than 2,500 public green spaces, parks and gardens. These areas provide a home for natural diversity and a high quality of life for citizens. INSPIRING PEOPLE

A leading voice on protected areas at a crucial time for Europe
For Ignace Schops, EUROPARC's newly elected President, the IUCN World Parks Congress 2014 "comes at a crucial moment for Europe". In this interview, he shares some of the key messages Europe will bring to the table in Sydney. He also gives his insight on how the Congress presents an opportunity for the European Union to show leadership in sustainability.

INSPIRING SOLUTIONS

European protected areas of key importance in the global context
Covering over one million km2 of land and sea, the EU's Natura 2000 network of protected areas has been instrumental in safeguarding natural environments from short-term economic and political decisions. An event recently took place to highlight the European contribution to the IUCN World Parks Congress 2014, and stress the importance of the region's protected areas in the global context.

RESPECTING PEOPLE

Home at last: A protected area in Georgia now under local control
For the first time since 1921, when Georgia became part of the Soviet Union, local authorities can manage and protect the Tusheti Protected Landscape. The government officially transferred control of the protected area to the municipality of Akhmeta. It is the first case of decentralized forest management in the country. The move will ensure local forest needs can be met in a sustainable way and provide employment for local people.

BLUE SOLUTIONS

New alliances to protect Fiji's Nasoata Island
New ways of managing natural resources are developing on the Fijian island of Nasoata, involving partnerships between local people and authorities. About half the size of London's Hyde Park, the uninhabited island belongs to the people of Nakorovou village. A plan is bringing together formal and informal management systems at the national, provincial and community level, with a consultation process initiated by IUCN.

WORLD HERITAGE

Stronger governance for Lake Ohrid
A new transboundary project for the natural and cultural heritage of the Lake Ohrid Region has seen the light of day. It aims to reinforce cooperation between Albania and FYR of Macedonia in protecting and managing the World Heritage site, and possibly extending its boundaries. The three-year project is a result of the so-called 'upstream process', encouraging governments to consult World Heritage advisory bodies - such as IUCN - before proposing sites for World Heritage listing.

Hosted by the Observatory for Central African Forests (OFAC) in Yaoundé, Cameroon, it will contribute to the collation and sharing of information on protected areas in Central Africa and provide support on decision-making processes to governments across the region.
