Subject: TODAY Mon Oct 13 at lunch: CBD COP 12 side event on Building Legal Frameworks to Implement the Nagoya Protocol
COP 12 SIDE EVENT: BUILDING LEGAL FRAMEWORKS TO
IMPLEMENT THE NAGOYA PROTOCOL
HOSTED BY THE IDLO AND ABS CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE
Monday, October 13, 2014
13:15 to 14:45
Hall F, Room 3 – IGOs Meeting Room
Building Nagoya Protocol-compliant legal frameworks is a key step in national implementation. No one-size-fits-all solution exists, but valuable lessons can be learned from past country experiences with implementing ABS legal frameworks. Experience has shown that frameworks will need to be built up through adaptive, learning-by-doing processes for which tailored legal advice and legal advisors will be vital for success.
IDLO and the ABS Capacity Development Initiative invite COP 12 delegates to learn about a new program that is building up the knowledge, capacity and global networks of national lawyers to advise their own governments to implement the Nagoya Protocol. Featuring speakers from Namibia and Peru , and presentation of draft Toolkit, capacity building course and global forum for Nagoya Protocol lawyers.

Attendees at this official COP 12 Side Event will be invited to:
- Engage in a moderated, interactive discussion on lessons learned from promising country experiences with implementing ABS legal frameworks
- Learn about new tools, courses and networks to support CBD Parties to build the capacity of their national legal advisors on Nagoya Protocol implementation.
This program forms part of the Legal Preparedness for Achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Targets Initiative, launched in 2012 by the IDLO & CBD Secretariat.

Subject: Invitation to Bright Spots Lunch Event at COP12 by Governments of Germany and Seychelles
*Apologies for cross-posting*
Dear colleagues,
For those of you who are participating in CBD COP12, you are cordially invited to the following event:
Biodiversity Bright Spots: Sharing Replicable Examples of Successful Resource Mobilization and Leadership
Official Side Event at the 12th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity - Pyeongchang, Republic of Korea
Date: October 14, 13:15–14:45
Location: Hall G, Room 2 - Youth Meeting Room
This event co-hosted by the governments of Germany and the Seychelles, supported by Rare, The Nature Conservancy and the Global Island Partnership, highlights solutions and profiles country action supporting the implementation of the resource mobilization strategy. It will provide a platform to showcase examples of innovative ways to
1. Strengthening national capacity for resource utilization and mobilizing domestic financial resources,
2. The role of subnational governments & communities in mobilizing domestic finance,
3. Strengthening existing financial institutions and promoting replication and scaling-up of successful financial mechanisms and instruments,
4. Innovative financial mechanisms at all levels to increase funding,
5. Enhancing global engagement for resource mobilization.
The event will use a world café / round-table format and participatory facilitation techniques to profile a selection of bright spots in support of the resource mobilization strategy and determine how they can be replicated and scaled in different contexts in order to advance the implementation of the Strategic Plan through behavioral, market, institutional and/or policy transformations.
The selected bright spots will recognize the importance of collective action, engagement of political leaders, including community-based and indigenous approaches, for mobilizing human and financial resources to achieve biodiversity and sustainable development objectives. During the International Year of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), members of the Global Island Partnership will highlight in particular successes led by Islands States – including the Caribbean Challenge Initiative's and Micronesian Trust Fund contributions to the implementation of multiple Aichi Biodiversity Targets. The German Environment Ministry (BMUB) will also present its International Climate Initiative, an innovative financing mechanism and a key element of Germany's funding commitments in the framework of the CBD.
The side event will be closed by a short speech from Carlos Manuel Rodriguez from the Costa Rica delegation talking about their success as well as about the need for action informed by his leading role in the High-Level Panel on Global Assessment of Resources for Implementing the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020.
For further information, please don't hesitate to reach out.
Thanks and best wishes,
Britta Garfield

Subject: Invitation side event Tuesday Oct 14th lunch time, sustainable land management Brazil and Germany
Dear colleagues,
we want to kindly invite you to a side event on Tuesday Oct. 14th, 1:15 pm in the Rio Pavillion on
Implementing Aichi targets 5, 7, 14 and 15 - research results from projects in Brazil and Germany
In the context of the programme "Sustainable Land Management" funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) international scientific projects are implemented in a wide range of regions of the world. The programme has the intention to provide scientific support to resource users and policy makers in their search for sustainable land management solutions. The projects are implemented in close cooperation between German scientists, scientists of the respective partner countries and regional and local governing bodies and stakeholder organizations. (http://nachhaltiges-landmanagement.de/en/).
In this event selected projects of the "Sustainable Land Management" programme from Germany and Brazil relate their scientific results to several Aichi-2020 targets, in particular to target 5 'halting habitat loss, target 7 'sustainable agricultute/forestry', target 14, the 'safeguarding of essential services, including services related to water' and to target 15, 'the restoration of at least 15% of degraded ecosystems'.
After a short introduction to the funding programme results will be presented by the following projects:
• INNOVATE: Interplay among multiple uses of water reservoirs via innovative coupling of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in Brazil (http://www.innovate.tu-berlin.de)
• COMTESS: Sustainable Coastal Land Management: Trade-offs in EcoSystem Services in Germany (http://www.comtess.uni-oldenburg.de/en)
The event will encourage discussions how science can and should best support the implementation of Aichi targets.
- Panel Discussion moderated by: Dr. Axel Paulsch, Institute for Biodiversity Network
Panelists:
Dr. Cornelia Paulsch (introducing the sustainable land management programme)
Dr. Arne Cierjacks (for INNOVATE)
Dr. Martin Maier (for COMTESS)
