[ECSNet] Carbon Markets for the Poor: A Contradiction in Terms? A Panel Discussion and Public Debate

Ahead of the climate summit in Durban in November, questions are being
asked about whether the commitment to carbon markets as a central
response to climate change is the right approach. Amid evidence of
double-counting of emissions reductions and a failure to deliver
sustainable development benefits in developing countries, is the Kyoto
Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) worth saving?

Invitation to Exhibit at Eye on Earth Summit - This is an invitation for all youth who have any relevant projects showcasing best practices in the utilization of environmental data to get in touch for their projects to be showcased at the 12-15 December 2011 Eye on Earth Summit http://www.eyeonearthsummit.org, Emerging Economies are at risk of losing valuable environmental assets as a result of inaccurate decision-making caused by the lack of useable, quality data. The solution is an achievable one. Much of the world's growing wealth of data is held in incompatible standards, ‘protected’ by bureaucratic complexity, restrained by lack of open access or ignorance of its existence. The Eye on Earth Summit http://www.eyeonearthsummit.org/ is convened to address these issues. The summit will enable global leaders, innovators and decision-makers to focus on an issue critical to the wise decision-making upon which our planet’s future depends: how to ensure effective access to the world's expanding pool of environmental and societal data by all of those who need it. Facilitated by Abu Dhabi Global Environmental Data Initiative (AGEDI) and hosted by Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Eye on Earth Summit will strengthen existing efforts and inspire a search for unified, global solutions to the issues that preclude access to data. The Eye on Earth Exhibition will showcase ‘best-impact’ examples of geospatial and environmental data technologies, projects and innovations. If there is anyone who is interested in showcasing any of the following, please get in touch. 1. Awesome application, web-based or otherwise, that promote utilization of environmental and societal data. 2. Any areas where youth are using mapping and data technologies to address environmental issues. For further information see http://www.eyeonearthsummit.org, From the ANFES list.

UK Environmental Audit Committee - Eighth Report Preparations for the Rio +20 Summit
“18. Globally, there has been inadequate progress on sustainable development since the 1992 Rio Earth Summit. There is still far to travel. Some 'planetary boundaries' having been breached, and others approaching, make the task more urgent than ever. It is a difficult message to convey to an often sceptical audience, but that makes it all the more important that the Government use the run up to the Rio+20 Conference next year to raise the profile of the case for action, both internationally and at home.“

The WFI Fellowship brings professionals in natural resources to conduct a practical research project at the World Forestry Center. In addition to projects, Fellows participate in weekly field trips, interviews and site visits to Northwest forestry organizations, research labs, universities, public and private timberlands, trade associations, mills, and corporations. The Fellowship is a unique opportunity to learn about sustainable forestry from the Pacific Northwest forestry sector, and to work with colleagues from around the world. Fellowships are open to any country, including U.S. citizens. The Fellowship program offers partial scholarships through the Harry A. Merlo Foundation, but all applicants must be able to cover at least 50% of the program fee. Over 85 Fellows from 27 countries have participated to date. Applications are accepted year-round. For more information and how to apply, please visit: http://wfi.worldforestry.org/index/international-fellowship.html
 2) International Educators Institute - Term: July 8-14, 2012 - Application deadline February 28, 2012. The International Educators Institute is an innovative forest study tour for environmental educators, natural resource managers and conservationists. Combining content-rich, hands-on experiences in the field with a multicultural exchange of best practices in education and research, IEI seeks to advance effective outreach, teaching and learning about social, economic, and environmental challenges facing the world’s forests. World-class scenery, special behind-the-scenes tours, and interviews with local people are combined with peer-to-peer leadership development. The course is scheduled for July 8-14, 2012 in Portland, Oregon, and the application deadline is Feb. 28, 2012. BUT FIRST, WON’T YOU PLEASE HELP?  Carbon Mapping and Allometric Equations for Selected Tree Species. Yogendra Kumar Karna writes, “I am doing my MSc research in Carbon mapping for tropical forests in Chitwan districts of Nepal. So I am desperately searching for allometric equations of some of the major forest tree species of Nepal. These tree species are as following: Asna/Saj - Terminalia tomentosa, Bhalayo - Semecarpus anacardium, Botdhangeo - Lagerstroemia parviflora, Sal - Shorea robusta, Chilaune - Schima wallichii, and Sindure - Mallotus philippensis. If someone will provide me these equations, I would be very grateful to them. Thanking you”. If you can assist, please contact Yongendra at yogendra.karna@yahoo.com.
MOUNTAIN FOREST GROWTH MODELS. In September, Shiva Pandey wrote, “I am PhD student at USQ, Australia. For my PhD research I am requesting you some information about growth model of mountain forests (stand level) to predict forest stock and time span to reach at the equilibrium stage in natural growth. Please forward me information about mountain tropical, sub tropical, lower temperate mix vegetation types that should fit to Nepal and north Indian forests. Please kindly inform me if you have specific literatures, equations etc.” Here are some sites that may be of interest. If you know of others, please contact Shiva at shivaspandey@yahoo.com
