WATER CRISIS FACTS

* While over 70% of our Earth's surface is covered by water...  only 2.5% is freshwater, and only ~1% of which is accessible for direct human uses.

   * 1.5 billion people lack safe drinking water, resulting in the death of 10,000 children a day.

   * 50% of the people in Africa suffer from water related diseases like cholera and infant diarrhea
   
* 1 in 3 Asians have no access to safe drinking water. 1 in 2 have no access to sanitation.
   
* The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimate that 70% of the fish/riparian habitat
Nationwide has been lost.

    * 80% of China's rivers no longer support fish.

   *  80% of Water in California is dedicated to unsustainable agriculture practices

    * U.S. drinking water contains more than 2,100 toxic chemicals that can cause cancer.

* By 2025 it is predicted that two-thirds of the world's population
will be living in conditions of serious water shortage.
One-third will be living in conditions of absolute water scarcity.

Gemma Bulos - Director of the Global Women's Water Initiative

Gemma Bulos is a multi award-winning social entrepreneur and director of the Global Women's Water Initiative (GWWI). GWWI is building a cadre of women trainers in East Africa versed in a holistic set of water, sanitation, and hygiene strategies capable of building various appropriate technologies and launching social enterprises.

Before GWWI, Gemma was founding director of A Single Drop for Safe Water, Philippines (ASDSW). ASDSW developed training programs to support under-served communities to be able to identify, design, and manage their own water and sanitation solutions as a social enterprise. ASDSW's innovative model garnered Gemma national and international social entrepreneur awards including: Echoing Green, Ernst and Young, and Schwab Foundation. Her programs also won the Tech Museum Equality Award and Warriors of the U.N. Millennium Goals.

Additionally, Gemma has been recognized as one of the Most Influential Thought Leaders and Innovative Filipinas in the U.S. by Filipina Women's Network; and one of the top 10 Water Solutions Trailblazer by Reuters/Alertnet.


Warren Brush - Applied Ecologist, Permaculture Designer, Storyteller, and Cultural Engineer

Warren Brush is a veteran Permaculture designer, teacher, as well as a mentor, storyteller a devoted "farmer of culture" who works to inspire people worldwide to discover, nurture, and express their inherent gifts to create a regenerative future. He has worked for over 25 years in inspiring people of all ages to discover, nurture and express their inherent gifts while living in a sustainable manner. He is co-founder of Quail Springs Permaculture, Sustainable Vocations, Wilderness Youth Project, Trees for Children and his Permaculture design company, True Nature Design.

He works extensively in Permaculture education and sustainable systems design in North America, Africa, Middle East, Europe, and Australia. He has devoted many years to mentoring youth and adults to inspire and equip them to live in a sustainable manner with integrity and a hopeful outlook. His mentoring includes working with those who are former child soldiers, orphans, indigenous peoples, youth from troubled families and situations as well as those youth from other varied and privileged backgrounds.

He teaches courses including: Permaculture Design Certification, Rainwater Harvesting Systems, Ferro- Cement Tank Building, Compost Toilet Systems, Greywater Solutions, Water for Every Farm, Drought Proofing, Cultural Mentoring, Introduction to Permaculture Systems, Corporation Sole Formation, Food Forestry, and origins skills among other offerings.
