UNEP, IDB Cooperate to Support SDGs and Paris Agreement 20_January 2016: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) have announced that they will cooperate on environmental conservation in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change. The IDB is set to increase its financial support to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to more than US$150 billion over the coming years. continued... ITPGR Reports on its Sixth Governing Body, CBD Highlights Outcomes of Relevance 19_January 2016: The report of the sixth session of the Governing Body (GB 6) of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGR) has been made available online. Given the close linkages between the ITPGR, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing (ABS), the CBD Secretariat has issued a notification highlighting some of the GB 6 outcomes that are of particular relevance to the CBD and the Nagoya Protocol. continued... Forests News MGPoF Provides Input into UNFF Quadrennial Strategic Plan 6_January_2016: The Major Groups Partnership on Forests (MGPoF) has provided its input into the quadrennial strategic plan (2017-2020) of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF). The proposal responds to the call by the UNFF Secretariat to all stakeholders to submit input, following adoption of a UNFF 11 resolution calling for the design of a strategic plan to serve as a roadmap for 2017-2030. continued... Water and Sanitation News GEF Highlights Multi-focal Project Funding Approach, NCSE Calls for Proposals 21_January 2016: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) highlighted the increased need for water cooperation worldwide, as the National Council on Science and the Environment (NCSE) convened its 16th conference and global forum in Washington DC, US, focusing on the water-energy-food nexus. continued... UN Boosts Water Monitoring Efforts on SDG 6, Launches High-Level Panel with World Bank 21_January 2016: UN Water has published a guide on 'Monitoring Water and Sanitation in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,' while UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and World Bank President Jim Yong Kim have launched a high-level panel to promote financing and implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) on water and sanitation. The panel, co-chaired by the Presidents of Mauritius and Mexico, seeks to promote dialogue, innovative financing and implementation strategies for SDG 6, while the publication provides a framework for monitoring the eight targets under the Goal. continued... FW: Call for science briefs - UN Global Sustainable Development Report

The team preparing the Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR) is issuing an open call for science briefs to members of the global sustainable development community.

The GSDR is a United Nations publication aiming to strengthen the science-policy interface at the UN High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), and provide a strong evidence-based instrument to support policymakers in promoting poverty eradication and sustainable development.

With the establishment of the UN High-level Political Forum (HLPF) in 2012, Governments have created an entry point for scientists across the world to be heard at the highest levels of the United Nations. The call for science briefs – concise, factual, peer reviewed, open access contributions from scientists and researchers that highlight issues, research findings or solutions - is a unique opportunity to bring scientific issues to the attention of policy makers. The briefs will inform the ongoing work on emerging issues in preparation for the Global Sustainable Development Report. All briefs that meet the requirements set out out in the call will be made available on the GSDR website.

The deadline for briefs is 18 February, but submissions will also be accepted after that date.

WHO Predicts Increased Global Health Impacts Due to El Niño 22_January 2016: Severe drought, flooding, heavy rains and temperature rises are all known El Niño effects that can lead to food insecurity and malnutrition, disease outbreaks, water shortages and disruption of health services, according to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO). The report indicates that the current 2015-2016 El Niño is predicted to be the worst in recent years and comparable to the 1997-1998 El Niño, which had major health consequences. WHO warns that the health implications of the 2015-2016 El Niño are expected to be more intense in developing countries, which have less capacity to reduce such impacts. continued... UN Releases First World Ocean Assessment 26_January 2016: The UN has published the First Global Integrated Marine Assessment, also known as the 'First World Ocean Assessment.' The assessment is expected to provide a scientific basis for consideration of ocean issues, including Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14 (Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development). continued... UN Secretary-General, UN Women Prepare for CSW 60 21_January 2016: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has released a series of reports and documents ahead of the 60th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW 60). The report on 'Women's Empowerment and the Links to Sustainable Development' argues that gender-responsive implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development will contribute to leaving no one behind, and to the accelerated implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA) and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). continued... UNCTAD Highlights Protection Needs in Digital Revolution 15_January 2016: A policy brief from the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) cautions that the large-scale replacement of jobs by robots may cause substantial losses to governments' fiscal revenue, which could challenge their ability to fund social protection, especially at a time when more people may require such schemes. continued...
