Subject: New SNV REAP Publication: An Approach to Promote REDD+ Compatibel Wood-fuel Value Chains

Dear colleagues and friends,

Wood based fuels remain the primary energy source for households in developing countries. The extraction of wood for fuel can lead to encroachment into forested areas and has been identified as one of the principal drivers of forest degradation in national programmes on REDD+, particularly for Sub-Saharan Africa. Wood-fuel can potentially be a renewable energy and a critical income source for the poor, if managed properly. The wood-fuel value chain is generally characterised by the presence of many actors, informal practices and often unequal distribution of benefits, leading to a situation where there is little incentive to extract wood-fuel sustainably; with the poorest groups often suffering the most.

SNV undertook research to examine the wood-fuel value chain and to identify key issues that preclude wood-fuel from being used sustainably. Based on this, SNV developed an approach that can help policy makers and practitioners to better understand the wood-fuel value chain and to target interventions in ways that contribute to reducing forest degradation and improve the livelihoods of those communities involved in the sector. While this approach may have wider application, the focus is Sub-Saharan Africa.

Dear reader,
Welcome to a new edition of Infosylva. We open this edition by drawing your attention to a newly-released report by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the Resources and Rights Initiative (RRI), which offers an original and thought-provoking thesis: Forest community rights should be fostered as community-owned and managed forests are reportedly in a better position to cope with global warming. (In English and Spanish)
In an attempt to keep erosion at bay on the river island of Majuli in India where he lives, a man has been planting trees for 35 years, transforming dry wasteland into what is now a forest of 550 hectares, an area larger than Central Park in New York. (In English and French)
In Morocco a serval, a local feline slightly bigger than a lynx, has been photographed in the mountains of the Middle Atlas. Thought to be extinct in the wild in Morocco, its rediscovery has caused excitement among ecologists. (In Spanish and French)
In the Honduran Flower Mountains, indigenous communities belonging to the Tolupan ethnic group are fighting for the survival of their language and cultural heritage, by staying united despite their extreme poverty and difficult livelihoods. (In Spanish)
Kazakhstan is developing its new programme for forest management to 2020, aimed at creating the right conditions for the conservation of forest ecosystems and their effective management, using a sustainable development approach. (In English)
This news and much more in this new edition of Infosylva.   Previous issues

Estimado lector/a,

Subject: Chinese views of African forests | New report from IIED

Dear colleague

We are pleased to let you know about a new research report that is now available to download from the IIED website:

Chinese views of African forests: Evidence and perception of China-Africa links that impact the governance of forests and livelihoods

Chinese activities in African forests have a wide range of impacts. In some places, Chinese firms appear to comply with corporate social responsibility requirements and contribute to the welfare of local communities, and there is some evidence of increasing concern over forest sustainability. However, for the majority of Chinese timber companies, responsible purchasing policies have yet to be implemented. And while China's investment in African forests remains a small share of its total investment in the continent, and accounts for a relatively small proportion of its total forest product imports each year, China has become the key destination for timber exported from many African countries. Through literature review and interviews with a sample of stakeholders, this report offers a range of Chinese perceptions on China's involvement in African forestry.
