A compilation of items recently posted to the Sustainable Development Policy & Practice knowledgebase Latest News - 17 November 2014 Symposium Reflects on OWG, Identifies Science Needs for SDGs 15_November 2014: At a symposium on 'Science and the Sustainable Development Goals,' Csaba Kőrösi, Permanent Representative of Hungary to the UN and Co-Chair of the Open Working Group on SDGs, and Mark Stafford Smith, Chair of Future Earth Science Committee, Science Director of Climate Adaptation Flagship at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), reflected on the proposed SDGs, and outlined ways for scientists to help shape the goal set going forward. continued...   Australia, Finland and Switzerland Elected to ECOSOC 10_November 2014: The UN General Assembly (UNGA) elected Australia, Finland and Switzerland to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in a single secret ballot. The new members will fill the unexpired terms of office of Canada, Denmark and New Zealand. All will begin their terms of office on 1 January 2015, with Australia's term lasting one year, and Finland and Switzerland's term ending in two years, on 31 December 2016. continued...   UNECE Holds First Regional Review of Beijing+20 7_November 2014: Participants from the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) region reviewed both achievements and challenges in implementing the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, at a high-level Regional Review meeting on Beijing+20. Recommendations focused on: promoting labor market policies and laws on gender equality; women's equal representation in policy and decision-making; prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls; women's and girl's access to justice, including as a strategy to realize other rights; and implementation of all areas of the Beijing Declaration. continued...   African Civil Society Assesses Progress on Beijing Platform for Action 7_November 2014: Participants at an African civil society forum discussed the Beijing Platform for Action's 12 critical areas of concern, noting achievements in economic, political and social aspects, but recognizing that progress has been slow, and noting fatigue among those leading the women's movement. The forum was organized by UN Women, the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the African Women's Development and Communication Network (FEMENT) and IPAS, as part of the Beijing 20-year review process (Beijing+20). continued...   World We Want 2015, UNICEF Report on World Children Want 3_November 2014: Children emphasized the importance of family in their happiness and well-being, in an e-consultation on the post-2015 development agenda hosted on by World We Want 2015. The consultation posed 11 questions to children, ranging from what makes them happy and what they would like to change in their community, to describing what sustainable development means to them. continued...   UN Member States Pledge $650 Million for UN Development Work 12_November 2014: Twenty-six UN Member States pledged approximately US$650 million for UN development work at the 2014 UN Pledging Conference. The amount represents an increase of $US72 million compared to pledges announced in 2014 as well as a significant increase in contributions from non-Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Development Assistance (DAC) countries. continued...   UNEP IRP Concludes 15th Meeting; Names Potočnik as Co-Chair 8_November 2014: The UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) International Resource Panel (IRP) selected Janez Potočnik, the former European Union (EU) Commissioner for the Environment, as the new IRP Co-Chair, at its 15th meeting. The Panel also identified future areas of research, including: poverty eradication and natural resources governance; restoration and resilience of land biodiversity and ecosystem services; and circular economy and innovation. continued...   UN Decade of ESD Concludes; Launches Global Action Programme 12_November 2014: A three-day conference on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), convened by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Government of Japan, concluded with a declaration calling for urgent action to mainstream education for sustainable development (ESD) and include ESD in the post-2015 development agenda. continued...   POST2015 Project Briefs on Malnutrition "Double Burden" 10_November 2014: The UN University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS), Tokyo Institute of Technology, and the Earth System Governance Project have published POST2015/UNU-IAS Policy Brief #6, titled 'Ending the Double Burden of Malnutrition: Addressing the Food and Health Nexus in the Sustainable Development Goals.' The authors stress that improvement in economic conditions can lead to higher obesity risk, and suggest that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) address this by correlating targets and indicators, and delivery of educational programmes to increase health literacy globally. continued...   UN Regional Commissions Issue Joint Statement for Accelerated Sustainable Energy Transition 7_November 2014: At the Fifth International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development, the Executive Secretaries from the UN Regional Commissions signed a joint statement calling on their respective Member States to spur a faster transition to sustainable and fair energy.
